Jon Goddard  Rites (Ogle Ogle9, CD, 2002)

Guitarist Jon Goddard's delta bluesman influence comes to the forefront with his latest independent release. There are many notable pieces: Shine and Lament  could have easily been drafted down in a backwoods Louisiana bayou with a slightly dissonant variation here and there. Acoustic bottleneck slide is spotlighted appropriately on Frank's Porch probably in front of an audience of a few front yard on-lookers. In light of Martin Scorsese's recent PBS feature featuring Son House and others, Goddard's influences are felt on the cuff rather than the sleeve. Rolling In is the best on the disc, showing proper tradition but leaving space for individual invention. Thaw infuses feedback into the compositional equation by creating ghostly ambient results (one can only imagine if Muddy Waters had this at his disposal).  The Bridal Path enters into the Derek Bailey realm of plucking the strings above the neck. Stanley and the Mouse is the kind of down-home acoustic piece that Big Bill Broonzy or Steve Howe would be proud of with its downward descending chord progression and cross-picking style.  Waltz for Anja is the sole folk piece with solo mandolin as the key instrument and it's one of the highlights of the entire set. Overall, Goddard¹s got a strong sense of the deep-rooted blues and has done an excellent job updating it with a carefully chosen set of effects. Highly recommended to fans of Bill Frisell and blues roots guitar playing.
